Sie sind aber nicht sehr ausdrucksstark und verschmelzen auch nie mit den wunderschönen Hintergründen. Wie bereits eingangs geschrieben, wenn man es schafft, den Film mit den Augen eines pubertierenden Iron Maiden-Fans zu sehen, wird man unterhalten werden.
Schafft man das nicht, dann nicht! Quickly advancing glaciers, falling chunks of ice, sub-human savages, big dinosaur looking things, more sub-human savages, giant sea beasts, even more fucking sub-human savages.
If it appears and it might be threatening, they run away. Then the coolest character in the whole movie shows up. His name is Darkwolf. That's him standing on the rock in the poster.
And when he shows up, he goes full Conan The Barbarian on everyone's asses. He charges into huge groups of enemies, slaughtering them two or three at a time.
Fire and Ice is deeply flawed on a script level, but it will be a visual treat for anyone with nostalgic feelings towards the era of Filmation cartoons.
Fire and Ice is a very racist and homophobic endeavor to get through, one that I hope to god comes just from blissful ignorance and not actual hatred.
But it's pretty uncomfortable to watch. The "subhumans" or "savages" are just humans that have a much darker skin tone and speak a different language.
But in the film they are made the aggressors, and at the end when the film wants to be like "we have to move on and become better people" it's the white man that does it.
Even ignoring that, the film just isn't good anyway. The animation, with the help of rotoscoping, is great for action scenes.
Everything feels realistic in the movements of attacks. The music…. This is a movie about those guys you used to see airbrushed on the sides of vans and cool cars back in the day.
The guys who stood on rocks with women clinging to their legs. It's terrifically stupid but looks great. Who would go off to fight the ice people in only underwear?
Everyone in this is only wearing their underwear, I didn't see a single pair of pants the whole time. This is clearly supposed to be a thrilling action-adventure in the Hollywood tradition, and perhaps in a more beautiful world it would have touched off a new era of feature film animation, one not bound by the standards of children's entertainment and marketing.
But it's hard to imagine an audience of children or otherwise being excited by this in the conventional sense - Bakshi's animation and Frazetta's art are beautiful to look at, but they lack a certain immediacy, making the action scenes seem like after-the-fact recreations rather than anything with a visceral or emotional impact.
As with most of the films Ralph Bakshi made, his minute rotoscope-animation medieval fantasy epic isn't an objective success but certain sub-sects of viewers and film fans probably hold it in handsome regard.
Valid arguments stand for either perspective - in the pro column, there are some really cool backdrops throughout the movie that beautifully mix lighting, color, depth, and majesty to whom much credit must be given contributing painters Thomas Kinkade!
Review by Timminy. Fire and Ice is a high fantasy animated movie directed by Ralph Bakshi. In this film an enemy named Lord Nekron who controls the ice region from Ice Peak is at war with King Jarol of Fire Keep as he tries to conquer the world.
The animation style used for this film is known as rotoscoping and I have always found this strange to watch but it does kind of work for the high fantasy genre.
This type of animation is filmed in live action and then traced onto animation cels. It is kind of a precursor to motion capture.
The animation is pretty crap by most standards, with backgrounds looking like they were painted by Bob Ross while awkwardly rotoscoped characters float in front of them wearing nappies.
The rotoscoping technique seems to limit the scope of the film rather than expand it. Yes, the characters move smoothly - but so what?
The only interesting-looking character here is basically Batman in a loincloth. The best part, facial expressions. Recommend multiple viewings with some cool tunes, good friends and a couple of cold ones!
