The crevasse footage is nothing short of amazing. And frighteningly beautiful. Not the place to be stuck! Even though this is a no cell or sat phones, no internet climb and legendary climbing story and we know how it ends, the suspense is glorious which means the pacing and editing are top notch.
The great retelling of the events by the actual participants is so much more effective than a 3rd party narration.
That's the best part, really, as you know they experienced it and felt every second. If you just want a trailer and ending, then don't bother.
The fun here is in the full experience, and if you are a climber or just an armchair climber, like me, it's as gripping as any suspense.
It's up there with any of the top mountaineering adventures. Trivia: The film is kind of confusing, if you aren't a climber, in that it sounds like no one has summited Siula Grande since.

Although, a documentary charting the perilous journey to ascend the West Face of Siula Grande in Peru, it bears the hallmarks of a tense, edge of the seat survival film.
These nerve shredding glimpses are ably supported by on screen recollections by the actual men who took on the challenge before them, and it adds an authenticity to the story.
Despite being able to foresee the eventual outcome of the subject matter at hand, as a viewer I was still in awe and gripped by what occurred, and most likely you will be too.
Directed by Kevin McDonald; who would later go onto direct The Last King Of Scotland among others, it is no surprise that this film is universally acknowledged to be one of the best documentaries ever made.

Very honest documentary-style film about a mountain expedition that went wrong. Surprisingly gripping I had no idea that coming down the mountain is when the majority of bad things happen In , a group of four climbers in competition for a Summit, were killed in their attempt to climb the danderous Eiger's North Face in Switzerland.
When they tried to descend it using the same route, Simpson broke his left leg after a short fall down an ice cliff. The crucial pain and the hard conditions of the dangerous descent, delayed them enough time to be caught by a violent Storm.
Then, all the efforts of Yates to help his partener became useless, the situation went from bad to worse and suddenly their Lives turned upside down.
These two accidents have something in common: the cut of a rope. In Eiger, the cut of that rope was supposed to be the salvation of half of the Team, but suddenly and ironically also became their damnation!
In Siula, the rope was cut when Simon Yates after an awfull struggle of an hour and a half with strong winds and snow, lost the contact with his wounded partner under the furious storm, and thought he was dead.
I often asked myself these questions: what was in the Minds of Simpson and Yates to go straight to that remote dangerous Peak, an "Extreme Mountain" in Alpinism vocabulary, already knowing if something went wrong they had no escape?
A hidden Wild Place far from everything even from the Camp, without any means of communication nor transport at the time? Were the five or ten minutes up there worth-while in way to put their Lives at an enormous risk?
Were they out of their minds? All the answers I found are ambiguous! Nobody knows not even experts what motivates these People! I'm also a lover of Forests Seas and Mountains and know the feeling to be close to the Sky!

There's here an intrinsically athmosphere of great suffering and we can perfectly get inside Simpson's still open Wounds And if at first they were reluctant to accept the invitation to help on the Film, soon they would regret to have aggreed on that painful return to the Past!
Don't miss the interesting "making off" and the interviews, because they are a very good illustration of the Real Drama. This is a touching documentary based off the book of the same name by Joe Simpson.
The interviews intertwined with the reenactments create a powerful and moving film to watch, which really gets across the essence of the book and what occurred on that mountain.
It is almost unbelievable that Simpson managed to survive, and it is nice to see him defend Simon Yates after all of the hate Yates had to withstand upon their return home.
The climbing community should have reacted better. However, MacDonald does an exceedingly good job of transferring the story from the page to the screen and personally I found this to be motivating for mountaineering, and just emphasised the reasons why people choose to partake in dangerous hobbies.
I heartily recommend this for people who have read the book, and for anyone who has an interest in hiking, climbing, mountaineering or the limits the human body can take.
