I'm NOT a "movie person", but I read this book and wanted to watch the movie. Aside from not being set in England like the book, I thought the movie followed the book well and was great.
Many of the "negative" reviews didn't watch past the first 10 minutes of the movie. Good acting and an unexpected twist.
I'd recommend it. This movie I watched this as a random view on an early winter's morning. Even though I was able to with the movie unfold without interruption, it wasn't until half-way through that I understood the various characters and their relationship to each other in the cast.
I won't spoil the ending, I'd just say next time you have some down tie alone - make a cup of tea and experience this "Nocturne" - no, "funeral dirge" rhythm of a movie.
With a riveting plot and unexpected resolution. I read the book when it first came out, which was a while ago. From what I remember, this is a fairly faithful adaptation.
The story, quite honestly, is fairly dark and depressing. There isn't anyone to root for in this movie or the book.
The best one can hope for is that the truth comes out, which it does eventually. And Rachel finally starts getting her life together.
Totally ignore reviews by people who say they only watched 15 or 20 minutes of the movie. It has quite a twisted, convoluted plot so you cannot evaluate a movie like that in 15 or 20 minutes.
I understand why they might not like it - as noted, it is not a cheerful movie so if you don't like movies like "Gone Girl" you probably won't like this one.

I think if I hadn't known the storyline and the characters I would have been totally confused. The worst thing though was the quality of the soundtrack, I had to haves subtitles on as it was so muffled.
Blunt plays a jealous divorcee who spends her time travelling on the train in order to spy on her previous husband and his new family.
As she was unable to have children, she believes that they must be having the perfect life but due to a drink problem, she cannot quite recall things too clearly.
The film then goes into a series of flashbacks not the best idea as this has been done to death where Blunt's memories become clearer as she begins to overcome her alcohol problem.
Then she realizes that her ex husbands new marriage is not as perfect as it initially seemed as he's cheating on his new partner just as he did with her.
Not only that but many of her memories were distorted in her mind through drink and his lies. Overall watchable but the overly convoluted storyline lets it down.
Really liked this film. The Girl on the Train is the story of Rachel Watson's life post-divorce. Every day, she takes the train in to work in New York, and every day the train passes by her old house.
The house she lived in with her husband, who still lives there, with his new wife and child. As she attempts to not focus on her pain, she starts watching a couple who live a few houses down -- Megan and Scott Hipwell.
