Diese selbstzweckhaften Momente tragen im Gegensatz zu Avatar aber nichts zur Handlung bei. Nicht von ungefähr wurde der 3D-Effekt auch erst in der Postproduktion allerdings auch auf Wunsch von Burton selbst als überflüssiger Marketing-Zuckerguss hinzugegeben.
Alice im Wunderland würde nicht funktionieren, wenn neben all der formalen Perfektion die Figuren blass blieben.
Und hier zeigt sich Burtons wahre Meisterschaft. Um Depp mehr Raum für die Entwicklung seines schizophren-liebenswürdigen Charakters einzuräumen, wurde die Rolle des Hutmachers deutlich ausgebaut.
Mit einem irren Kostüm, ständig wechselnden schottischen Akzenten, digital bearbeiteten Augen, tonnenweise Make-Up und einer orangenen Lockenpracht darf Depp ganz im Stile von Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik die Exzentrik seiner Figur auf die Spitze treiben.

Wie bei seinem Captain Jack aus dem "Fluch der Karibik" gelingt ihm als verrückter Hutmacher das Kunststück, die Figur sowohl am Rande des Wahnsinns als auch des Tuntenklischees vorbeischrammen zu lassen - ohne jemals abzustürzen. Bei ihrem ersten Besuch hatte sich Alice nur verhört. Der allzu gewöhnliche Handlungsrahmen wiegt daher im Gesamteindruck nicht zu viel, muss aber angemahnt werden. In Deutschland kam der Film am 4. Vereinigte Staaten. Deswegen haben sie Alice zurückgeholt, die der Sage nach den Jabberwocky erlegen soll.
